All the big teams including China (favorite team), Malaysia, Indonesia, Denmark and Korea have sent all their top players to in their attempt to emerge victorious in both events. So, what is your prediction? Based on the most recent results from this year's badminton tournaments, I would say that all the top five teams especially for Thomas Cup have an equal chance of going all the way provided that they live up to their top game when it matters most. Nevertheless, my prediction is still China taking both the cups, although I am hopeful that other countries such as Malaysia (haven't won Thomas Cup since 1992) and Indonesia (last won it in 2002) would step up their game and emerge as Champions!
Malaysia are playing in Group B, which has Nigeria and Japan. And they can only be up against China in the knockout stage and it could be in the quarter-finals if they slip up against Japan and advance as group runners-up.

But Gunalan feels that it is unlikely that Malaysia have to take on China in the quarter-finals.
“We have two world No. 1s in Chong Wei and Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong who should give us the first two points and I think we should have no major problem beating Japan. But China will be a different class of opposition,” he said.
“If we are to face China in the semi-finals, it would look like we have no chance on the surface. But if we get everything right with the proper strategy in place, we can even finish China off with a 3-0 scoreline.
“But it is crucial for Chong Wei to get the ball rolling in the first singles. Chong Wei has been unbeaten thus far this year and he will be relishing the opportunity to take on Olympic and world champion Lin Dan.
“He has everything going for him – home support, the best coaching staff and even the VIPs are behind him. Chong Wei needs to lead this team to a good start as he may not have a better chance like this in two years’ time.”
Gunalan was also the team manager of the Malaysian team who last lifted the Thomas Cup in 1992. Then, Malaysia defeated China in the semi-final and went on to beat Indonesia to claim the title.
Malaysia last played against China in the Finals in Jakarta in 2008 and were beaten 2-3 in the semi-final.
Chong Wei had beaten Lin Dan to hand Malaysia a great start but Kien Keat-Boon Heong surprisingly failed to lift their game and were beaten by Fu Haifeng-Cai Yun in the second match.
Gunalan feels that Kien Keat-Boon Heong have the upper hand against Guo Zhengdong-Xu Chen who are now the top ranked Chinese pair.
“Haifeng-Cai Yun are the second doubles pair and I feel it is better for Malaysia’s chances. If Chong Wei wins, Kien Keat-Boon Heong can use their experience and ride on the home support to give Malaysia a 2-0 cushion.
“In this situation, China will be under tremendous pressure. They are the hot favourites and will not be expecting to be down by 0-2 after the first two matches and it will be easier for our veteran, Wong Choong Hann, to take on the younger Chen Jin.
“Choong Hann will then be all psyched up to give his best shot to deliver the winning point for Malaysia. Who knows we don’t even have to play the second doubles and third singles.
“It will be difficult if Malaysia trail 1-2 or if the tie goes down to the wire as we do not have good options to play in the second doubles and third singles.”
Mohd Fairuzizuan Mohd Tazari-Mohd Zakry Abdul Latif are the likely candidates to play the second doubles against world champions Haifeng-Cai Yun but coach Rexy Mainaky can opt for Hoon Thien How-Ong Soon Hock.
Barring injury, Hafiz is certain to play the third singles match in a crucial tie.
“On paper, Hafiz may look shaky against Bao Chunlai but an upset is not beyond him,” said Gunalan. “There are also many influential factors, like the environment at the venue, the home ground and the mood of the players on the day. If everything turns out our way, we can emerge triumphant.”
But if her determination is anything to go by, Malaysia can certainly count on her to rally the team together to beat the odds in the Uber Cup Finals.
Barely hours after coming down with high fever, Mew Choo surprisingly turned up on court to train with the rest of the team at the Putra Stadium in Bukit Jalil yesterday. To her relief, the fever and flu scare turned out to be nothing much to worry about.

Getting a rub down: A masseur attending to Wong Mew Choo after the training session at the Putra Stadium in Bukit Jalil Wednesday.
“I was a bit worried as I thought I was showing symptoms of H1N1 after I came down with high fever last night (Tuesday),” she said.
“I do not have high fever any more and I asked the National Sports Institute (NSI) director general, Datuk Dr Ramlan Aziz, for permission to join training.
“I still feel a bit weak and dizzy at times but I do not want to let my team-mates down. I have missed one day of training already and I just hope I recover my full strength by the time the tournament begins.”
As the first singles player, Mew Choo, who turned 27 on May 1, definitely has to win all her matches if Malaysia are to harbour hopes of making a strong impression in the Finals.
Unlike the men’s team, the women’s Uber Cup squad are not expected to contend for the title.
But there is hope on Malaysia equalling their best-ever achievements – quarter-final appearances in the last two campaigns. At the 2008 Finals in Jakarta, they were beaten 1-3 by Indonesia. Malaysia were also quarter-finalists in the 2004 edition, also in Jakarta.
“Although we have two replacement singles players in the team, I hope we still can do well. We will feel the absence of Julia (Wong) and Lydia (Cheah) but we can count on our doubles pairs who have improved a lot,” said Mew Choo.
Julia and Lydia, who came down with knee injuries, have been replaced by Sannatasah Saniru and Sonia Cheah. The others in the squad are Tee Jing Yi, Chin Eei Hui-Wong Pei Tty, Woon Khe Wei-Vivian Hoo and Goh Liu Ying-Ng Hui Lin.
Malaysia open their campaign in the group stages against the United States on Monday and meet title holders China the following day.
Four years ago, he was fighting for his life after contracting a mysterious illness. He had to stop playing for a year because of weakening muscles. He was losing hair and the doctors suspected that it could be some form of cancer.

“That is why it is quite emotional to be standing here with my team-mates, gearing up for my first Thomas Cup Finals,” said Soon Hock.
He forms the third ranked pair in the team with Hoon Thien How behind Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong and Mohd Fairuzizuan Mohd Tazari-Mohd Zakry Abdul Latif.
“I took up badminton seriously for only one reason ... I wanted to play in the Thomas Cup Finals,” said the 25-year-old Soon Hock.
“Two years ago, it appeared to be a lost dream. I thought I was just good enough to guide another junior. But my fortunes changed after teaming up with Thien How last year.
“We clicked and reached the Indonesian Open semi-final last year (defeated Denmark’s Mathias Boe-Carsten Mogensen and Indonesia’s Tony Gunawan-Candra Wijaya) and the Malaysian Open quarter-finals this year (upset South Koreans Lee Yong-dae-Jung Jae-sung). Now, I am overjoyed because all my hopes and aspiration as a badminton player have become a reality.”
And he thanked three people – his father Boon Chong, medical practitioner Dr Liu Zhi Ye and girlfriend and former gymnast Yap Yee Yin – for giving him reasons to keep going.
“They were there when I was down and they are still my pillars of strength,” he said.
“China-born Dr Liu (based in Canada) was able to treat me when many others failed. My badminton-loving father and Yee Yin continue to give me encouragement in my badminton career.”
Now that Soon Hock is in the Finals, he is determined to justify the faith of many who have stood by him.
“I will go all out if I am given a chance. I want to help Malaysia regain the Cup for all the people and those who have belief in us. We will support the team in the best way we can,” he said.
If they are fielded, they can expect to play the second double matches against Lars Paaske-Jonas Rasmussen (Denmark), Jae-sung-Shin Baek-cheol (South Korea), Alven Yulianto-Hendra Gunawan or Nova Widianto-Mohd Ahsan (Indonesia) and Cai Yun-Fu Haifeng (China).
He has an advantage over everyone else to win a tie for Malaysia in a deciding match of a Thomas Cup tie.
And if he fails to capitalise on it, he will only have himself to blame.

Besides home advantage, he has his coaches, Hendrawan and elder brother Roslin, to give him pointers on what to do and what not to do in a deciding match.
It was Hendrawan who defeated Roslin in the third singles in the 2002 final in Guangzhou to give Indonesia a 3-2 victory.
That was the last time Malaysia played in the final. As for Indonesia, it was the last time that they emerged as the Thomas Cup champions.
Hendrawan said that Hafiz had the benefit to learn from coaches with experience on how to cope if he were thrown into a do-or-die situation.
“He has the best of both worlds. I am able to relate to him on what strategy I used to overpower Roslin while his brother can tell him as to why he lost,” said the former world champion.
“That year, I went into the match as the underdog but I did not let it dampen my spirit and focus.
“Hopefully, Hafiz will be able to make use of the priceless tips and learn from our experiences.”
Hendrawan said that he was getting used to his unique situation ahead of the Finals.
“Before the match against Roslin (in 2002), I played against Hafiz in the group tie and beat him. He was so young then but yet he had so much fire in him,” he said.
“Now, I am his coach and may have to plot a victory for Malaysia over Indonesia.
“I am a professional and I will give my best. In fact, I do not feel good when people on the street here keep on reminding me that I was the cause of Malaysia’s defeat in 2002.
“I have a chance to change that and help bring back the Cup for Malaysia. I will do my best to make sure that Hafiz delivers.”
Hendrawan added that he was not raising hopes on Hafiz’s chances but genuinely believes that his charge can rise to the occasion.
“He is in good spirit and showing some extra zeal. I see determination in him to fulfil his responsibilities as the third singles player,” he said.
Most of Malaysia’s ties this time are expected to go down to the wire and Hafiz will be out to make amends for failure in the last Finals in Jakarta. Then, he lost to China’s Chen Jin in the semi-final tie.
Together with coach and mentor Misbun Sidek, the duo have quietly developed a way over the last few weeks to catch the opponents by surprise in the Finals.

Chong Wei did not give much details but it is likely that the new weapon is expected to weaken his left-handed rival, Lin Dan of China.
At the last Finals in Jakarta in 2008, Chong Wei won all his first singles matches, including a fantastic win over Lin Dan.
Besides Lin Dan, Chong Wei’s top ranked counterparts in the other teams are Peter-Gade Christensen (Denmark), Park Sung-hwan (South Korea), Taufik Hidayat (Indonesia) and Kenichi Tago (Japan).
Chong Wei said that he had to find something new to take his game to greater heights.
He has not lost a match since winning the Super Series Masters Finals in Johor Baru last December. And thus far this year, he won the Opens in South Korea and Malaysia and emerged as champion in the 100th edition of the All-England in Birmingham.
“I cannot afford to be doing the same thing if I want to take my game to greater heights. Everyone is out to scalp me and I am not going to make it easy for them,” he said.
“I want to keep intact my unbeaten record this year in the Thomas Cup Finals.
“If I can come up well with what I have practised over the last couple of weeks, I should be playing more aggressively and faster on court.”
Chong Wei said that Lin Dan would not be the only main threat for him in the Finals.
“It is not right to think that Lin Dan is the only challenger for me in these Finals even though the whole world wants me to play against him,” he said. “Malaysia may not even meet China. What if they lose early? I would rather give equal attention to all my opponents.”
For now, he is doing his best to play the role as the team skipper.
“I was the team captain during the Sudirman Cup last year and the team did well to win a bronze medal for the first time. We have a very united side and there is a stronger desire to win,” said Chong Wei.
Malaysia last won the Cup in 1992 at the Stadium Negara in Kuala Lumpur.Badminton Passionhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13473035124574521910noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7125774700808241932.post-87267096637315326672010-05-05T13:09:00.000-05:002010-05-05T13:09:39.437-05:00Badminton News: Razif expects a Malaysia and Denmark tie to go 3-2 either way
By RAJES PAUL

A CLIFF-HANGER is on the cards if Malaysia are to meet Denmark in the Thomas Cup Finals.
The skipper of the Malaysian Thomas Cup-winning team in 1992, Razif Sidek, said that Denmark would be fighting for every point against Malaysia and the probable outcome would be 3-2 either way.

“They are strong and have a balanced team good enough to challenge Malaysia for every point. I predict that it will go right down to the wire,” he said. “This tie could go into the history books as one of the closest. On paper, both have equal strength. The only advantage Malaysia has is home support.”
Razif said that world No. 1 and All-England champion Lee Chong Wei should start the ball rolling for Malaysia against Peter-Gade Christensen.

“My money is on Chong Wei to win this match. There is the age factor and I think Chong Wei has the physical and home advantage,” he said.
“And, I do not think Peter has any outstanding stroke or special weapon to take down a much-improved Chong Wei this time.”
The former doubles specialist was also confident that the world No. 1 pair, Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boong Heong, would put Malaysia 2-0 ahead by getting the better of Mathias Boe-Carsten Mogensen.
“The Danes are on fire but the match should favour Koo-Tan if they can stay consistent with their attacking and defensive game,” said Razif.
“Our players should be ready to handle the psychology warfare from the Danes. They will try to irritate them and get them to be emotional. They should stay cool at all times.”
Razif, however, does not think, Malaysia will win points through either Wong Choong Hann in the second singles or Mohd Fairuzizuan Mohd Tazari-Mohd Zakry Abdul Latif.

Choong Hann will take on Danish rising star Jan O Jorgensen while Fairuzizuan-Zakry will have a giant task to get the better of reigning All-England and European champions Lars Paaske-Jonas Rasmussen.
“Based on statistics, Jorgensen stands a better chance. He has beaten several top players in the world, including Chong Wei and Taufik Hidayat (Indonesia). He will be in a better physical condition,” said Razif.
“But I salute Choong Hann for making a comeback to the national team. I know he will not give up without a fight and we will see him fighting for every point.
“Currently, oldies Lars-Jonas are the favourites. The world champions will be a tough nut to crack. On current form, I don’t see how Zakry-Fairuzizuan will be able to beat them.”
And if all goes according to Razif’s prediction, Malaysia will have to bank on Hafiz to save the day. And he hoped that the history would not repeat itself.
When Denmark last played against Malaysia in the 2006 Finals, the semi-final tie went into the decisive fifth match. Kuan Beng Hong failed to live up to expectations and lost to Joachim Persson.
“Hafiz will be the key in this tie. I hope he will deliver. The chances are 50-50 if he were to play against Persson. I hope he will make use of the home ground advantage to prove himself. I hope it will be a 3-2 win for Malaysia.”
Razif does not think that Denmark will field Kenneth Jonassen or Thomas Laybourn unless there are injuries in the team.
The earliest Malaysia are likely to meet Denmark is in the semi-finals and that too will depend on the fresh draw that will take place after the group ties.
Badminton Passionhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13473035124574521910noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7125774700808241932.post-50133278039465846662010-05-01T23:02:00.002-05:002010-05-01T23:02:53.142-05:00Badminton News: Paris perfect for Tan Fook’s honeymoon and last fling at gloryKUALA LUMPUR: Veteran men’s doubles shuttler Choong Tan Fook has two very good reasons for wanting to go to Paris in August.
The 35-year-old Tan Fook has qualified on merit with Lee Wan Wah for his eighth World Championships, which will be held in Paris from Aug 23-29.

And it would also be the perfect place for Tan Fook and Zhang Jiewen, who tied the knot last night, to go for their honeymoon.

Yesterday, Tan Fook and Olympic champion Jiewen of China treated about 1,000 guests to a romantic wedding dinner at Genting Highlands.
“I wanted it to be a very special occasion and I am happy that many were able to attend our wedding. I am also thrilled that our Thomas-Uber team members managed to take time off to join in this ceremony,” said a delighted Tan Fook.
Tan Fook, whose love affair with the Olympic champion blossomed in 2004, said that the world meet in Paris would mark an end to his decade-long badminton career.
“I have finally decided that the world meet in Paris will be my final shot at winning glory for the country. Then, I will move on,” said Tan Fook, who had reached the semi-finals twice in 2001 in Seville and 2007 in Kuala Lumpur.
“Of course, I will want to do well with Wan Wah. I want it to be the most memorable one.”
Tan Fook will then go into coaching – either in Malaysia or elsewhere.

For the record, the world No. 12 Tan Fook-Wan Wah did well to qualify for the world meet on merit despite having left the national team set-up for almost two years.

The others who made the cut are Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong and independent players Gan Teik Chai-Tan Bin Shen

The general impression among the public is that they do not trust Hafiz as the third singles player in the squad for the Finals, which will be held at Putra Stadium in Bukit Jalil from May 9-16.

They may have a point. After all, the former All-England champion has fared miserably on home soil.
Whether he likes it or not, Hafiz knows that the Finals will be the ultimate stage for him to come good and win back the confidence of the public.

And that is exactly what he intends to do.
“This is my fifth Finals appearance and the most challenging one,” said Hafiz after a training session at Juara Stadium in Bukit Kiara.
“The odds are against me. People have a negative perception about me and I do not blame them for that. I wish things were different but I have a challenge now to change their views,” he said.
“I have put in a a lot of effort in my preparation this time. I want to win all my matches as the third singles – that is my goal.”
Hafiz also acknowledged that he could not longer blame the Putra Stadium as a jinxed venue for him.
“Yes, I only have bad memories of this stadium. I used to be troubled by the strong draught in the stadium. But this can no longer be used as an excuse,” he said.
“In fact, I cannot remember any outstanding achievement from me on home soil. It’s time to change all that.”
Hafiz also said that it would be a failure if they do not end Malaysia’s 18-year wait for the Cup this time.
“A place in the final will not do for us. This is our home ground and we will have to go all out for the Cup,” he said.
“It is up to me to get the job done if any of the ties are level at 2-2. I did not do a great job two years ago but I am determined to make up for it. I hope this year’s Thomas Cup will be the turning point in my career.”
Hafiz certainly knows what he is talking about. Two years ago, Malaysia and China were tied at 2-2 in the semi-finals in Jakarta and it was up to Hafiz to deliver the winning points. Sadly, he went down to Chen Jin.
This time, as the third singles, he is likely to face some of these players – Danes Joachim Persson or Kenneth Jonassen, Indonesian Simon Santoso, China’s Bao Chunlai or Chen Long and South Korea’s Hong Ji-hoon or Lee Hyun-il.

The good news is that he has beaten all of them before. The bad news, however, is that he has lost to them more often than he has beaten them.

Besides Hafiz and Lee Chong Wei, the others in the Malaysian team are Wong Choong Hann, Tan Chun Seang, Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong, Mohd Fairuzizuan Mohd Tazari-Mohd Zakry Abdul Latif and Ong Soon Hock-Hoon Thien How.
But according to veteran Wong Choong Hann, badminton fans had better get used to pronouncing it because the Indonesian youngster is set to be one of the bright stars to watch out for at this year’s Thomas Cup Finals, which will be held at Putra Stadium in Bukit Jalil from May 9-16.

Dionysius, the world number 26, is the reserve player in the Indonesian squad. The others are regulars Taufik Hidayat, Sony Dwi Kuncoro and Simon Santoso.

He was selected ahead of Tommy Sugiarto and it could be due to his fighting performance against Chen Jin of China before bowing out 16-21, 21-19, 20-22 in the opening round of the All-England in Birmingham in March.

Tommy, who is son of the legendary Icuk, did not make the cut despite having had the experience of being the reserve in the squad at the last edition in Jakarta two years ago.
Choong Hann, who will play in the second singles for Malaysia, said that Dionysius had all the qualities needed to go far in the game.

“Having played so long, players like me can spot those with talent and I am convinced that there is something special about Dionysius. He is skilful and I have not seen one like him for some time,” said Choong Hann.
“He has a certain quality in him that sets him apart from several youngsters who have come through the pipeline in Indonesia.”

Besides Dionysius, Choong Hann also expects Japan’s Kenichi Tago, Denmark’s Jan O Jorgensen and Shon Wan-ho of South Korea and China’s Chen Long to take over the mantle from the seasoned campaigners.
“Some of the senior players have been recalled to play for their respective countries in the Finals. But this does not mean the current youngsters are not good enough but they are just going through a transition process now,” he said.

“The 21-point rally scoring format has allowed players like me to stay longer than we ought to. But I am confident a new era of players is just waiting to take over.”
Razif feels that the Koreans, bolstered by the return of dangerman Lee Hyun-il and their usually reliable doubles players, should not be taken lightly.

SOUTH Korea are not seeded this time but this is where the danger lies.
I’m sure all the top four teams – China, Indonesia, Denmark and Malaysia – will want to avoid playing them before the semi-finals, if possible.
As a team, South Korea are always hard to beat in a Thomas Cup tie and I believe they have a good chance to qualify for the final again.
Their players are always fighting, regardless of the situation, and they will fight until they drop dead on court.
It’s not going to be easy to take on a South Korean team if we are to face them in the quarter-finals after the fresh draw is made.
I must admit I am not so familiar with the Korean team as they have changed a lot but the singles line-up should be quite straight-forward.
Only thing is that they are unpredictable in the doubles department and this is where they have the advantage in their bid to make an impact in the Finals.
All their doubles players can play and are of equal strength.
They are capable of throwing up new combinations to surprise us and I can speak from experience when we (partnering Jalani Sidek) lost to them in our opening group tie when we hosted the 1992 Finals. Park Joo-bong did not play with his usual partner Kim Moon-soo and we were caught off-guard. Malaysia eventually lost the tie but it was a good wake-up call as we came back to win the tournament.
They would be even stronger if their doubles star Lee Yong-dae was not left out because of his injuries but I don’t think we should write off their chances.

Juggling act: Ko Sung-hyun (left) and Yoo Yeon-seong celebrate after beating Malaysia’s Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong in the Swiss Open final in March. — AP
There are six Korean doubles players (Shin Baek-cheol, Jung Jae-sung, Yoo Yeon-seong, Ko Sung-hyun, Kim Ki-jung-Cho Gun-woo) and this is where they are capable of throwing up new combinations.
I don’t know whether they will field the pairing of Sung-hyun-Yeon-seong (who beat Malaysia’s Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong to win the Swiss Open title in March) but I am sure they have been trying out the combinations back home before coming here.
I believe they are trying to soften the blow by bringing back former Asian Games silver medallist Lee Hyun-il and it is always a plus to have someone as experienced as him playing in third singles.
He was a very fast player and used to beat the top Chinese players when he was at his top a few years ago. I hope our coaches will try to dig out information on Hyun-il’s latest condition now that he has been brought back for the Finals.
Don’t forget, South Korea have valuable knowledge of our players from Li Mao, who coached our singles players, including Lee Chong Wei, just a few years ago.
South Korea have as good a chance as Denmark and Indonesia of making it to the final but, if you are talking about winning, China are still the favourites.
But this is now the 21-point system in badminton and anything can happen ... so there is still the element of surprise.
