TheStar news: Rashid wants camaraderie in Thomas Cup cast

By RAJES PAUL

KUALA LUMPUR: There is no place for individual heroes in the squad gearing up for the Thomas-Uber Cup Finals, which will be held at the Putra Stadium in Bukit Jalil from May 9-16.
National chief coach Rashid Sidek wants to have camaraderie among the players ahead of the world premier team events for men and women.

There will be a three-day motivation camp in Port Dickson from April 23-25 and it will be conducted by National Sports Institute’s (NSI) mental trainer Frederick Tan.
The players will also mingle over dinner and participate in fun games for two days on April 21 and 22.
Rashid, who was a member of the Malaysian team who last won the Thomas Cup Finals in 1992, said that team unity was the key to success.
“I do not want any prima donnas in the team. Usually, the players go after individual glory in Open tournaments. Now they have to set aside their personal interest,” he said.
“During my time, the team were single-minded in achieving success. We were like one big happy family.
“I want the players to build close rapport. Their objectives and goals should be the same and I hope that they will learn to support one another through these team-building exercises.”
Rashid added that the players would hold their centralised training at the Putra Stadium after getting the green light from the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM).
“Currently, the singles and doubles players, who have been shortlisted for selections, have their own training programmes at the Juara Stadium,” he said.
“During the Finals, our players will be based in a hotel. We do not want any distraction. The most important thing is for the players to feel comfortable.”
Rashid said that the training squad for the Thomas and Uber Cup Finals would be trimmed after the Asian championships (ABC), which will be held in New Delhi from April 12-18.
“We shortlisted players last month but there will be another cut after the ABC meet. We will name our final cast (of four singles and three pairs) just before the closing date for entries by name on April 23,” he said.
The players in the Thomas Cup training squad are Lee Chong Wei, Mohd Hafiz Hashim, Wong Choong Hann, Kuan Beng Hong, Tan Chun Seang, Chong Wei Feng, Chan Kwong Beng; Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong, Mohd Fairuzizuan Mohd Tazari-Mohd Zakry Abdul Latif, Mak Hee Chun-Tan Wee Kiong, Ong Soon Hock-Hoon Thien How, Lim Khim Wah-Chan Peng Soon and Goh Wei Shem.
In the women’s squad are Wong Mew Choo, Julia Wong, Lydia Cheah, Tee Jing Yi, Sannatasah Saniru, Yang Li Lian, Sonia Cheah; Chin Eei Hui-Wong Pei Tty, Vivian Hoo-Woon Khe Wei, Lim Yin Loo-Ng Paou Ling and Ng Hui Lin-Goh Liu Ying.
